Aakom-Kiiyii Health Services unrolls new programs that encourage the community to live a healthy lifestyle.

In an eight week walking challenge participants are giving a step counter that will keep track of users daily steps.

Following the challenge, the individual with the most steps will receive a FITBIT.

“We also have some other great prizes such as speakers, a blenders, gym bags, gift cards, beats headphones,” said Taylynne Hunt, Health Promoter at Aakom-Kiiyii Health Services.

Along with the Walking Challenge there is also a Watching Your Weight program where participants have the chance to learn about healthy eating, goal setting, meal planning and lifestyle tips that can work for weight management.

The program offers participants four classes – once a week – to learn how to effectively transform yourself to a healthier lifestyle.

During the first class of the program participants learned how to balance their calories in weight management.

One of the learning values of that program is developing your own plan to reduce your calorie intake.

The second half of the program participants will look deeper into the foods they are consuming.

More specifically the “4 P’s for eating healthy,” which includes plan, purchase, prepare and packing your food.

The finally leg of the course will have participants making better meal choices, especially when it comes to eating away from home.

That program is coordinated by Lindsay deBoer, registered dietitian at Aakom-Kiiyii Health Services.

“My goal is to work towards a fitness program but because of limited resources, I thought a good start would be the Walking Challenge because it’s something majority of people can participate in,” Hunt said.

The eight week Walking Challenge is set to wrap in March, and the four-part learning series wraps up on Feb. 13.
