A proud Blackfoot woman and member of the Piikani Nation announced her candidacy for Calgary City Councillor on Feb 14.

Marilyn North Peigan feels Indigenous representation is important within government, especially Calgary city hall.

“We need appropriate voices at the table if we are going to talk about inclusivity and diversity,” North Peigan said.

North Peigan played a pivotal role in developing the White Goose Flying Report in 2015, that was developed to determine which of the 94 Calls to Action are applicable by Calgary’s municipal government.

“Right now, our voices aren’t there, all these issues pertaining to the [Indigenous] community are falling on deaf ears,” she said.

North Peigan made the announcement on Feb. 14 to reclaim power and place the National Missing and Murdered Indigenous Woman and Girls Inquiry.

North Peigan is running for Ward 7 in the municipal election on Oct. 18, 2020.
